Salimu Jengo is the Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) World Lightweight Champion, a title he won this past January defeating Thailand´s Suriya Tatakhun, but now Tanzania also has the UBO International Lightweight Champion.

Veteran Cosmas Cheka won the vacant UBO International Lightweight title on Sunday September 13, when he was awarded a split decision after twelve close rounds against Malawian national Champion Hannock Phiri at the Jamhuri Stadium in Morogoro, Tanzania.

While young Phiri was very eager and active, and some felt he deserved the nod, Cheka landed the cleaner punches and often managed to counter effectively when the visitor came forward.

In round twelve Phiri scored a flash knockdown, but Cheka appeared to stumble as he was moving away, and no one could have complained had it been ruled a slip.

Judges Robert Kasiga and Anthony Ruta both scored the bout 115-112 in favor of Cheka, while Judge Ally Champion had Phiri winning 115-112.

Cheka (29), who is a former UBO World Super Featherweight Champion, improved his professional record to 25-13-6 (5). Phiri, still only twenty-two and with plenty of time to come again, drops to 10-2 (9).

The fight headlined a show promoted by Kaike Promotion, televised live by Azam TV.
