On Ringstar Management´s
huge The Roar Of Singapore II – The Pride Of
Singapore promotion at Resorts World
Sentosa, undefeated Ridhwan (7-0, 6 KOs) takes
on his toughest opponent to date, Fadhili Majiha
(20-8-4, 9 KOs) from Tanzania for the vacant
Universal Boxing Organization (UBO) World Super
Featherweight crown.
He is fighting not only
for himself, but for all of Singapore, and he
has the support of the entire nation when he
enters the ring on May 27. When he won the WBA
Asia title on April 8, even Singapore Prime
Minister Lee Hsien Loong made a point to
publicly congratulate and praise Ridhwan on
social media.
“That
meant a lot to me”, said Ridhwan. “At
first, when someone told me, I thought it was a
joke, but then more people told me and I of
course found out that it was not a joke at all.”
“It
makes me feel really good that a very important
person such as our Prime Minister did that, and
it was a big honor.”
Becoming a world champion
in only his eighth professional fight, will be a
major achievement for Ridhwan, who, on May 27,
is only fifteen months removed from his paid
debut!
Even though he was an accomplished amateur,
winning medals in major competitions, and
despite the fact that he has impressed so far in
the professional ranks, it takes extraordinary
confidence in himself, and from the people
around him, to take this major leap this early.
Promoter Scott O´Farrell
believes the time is right, saying: “We all
believe in Ridhwan. I believe in him, his
manager believes in him, and his trainer
believes in him. He believes in himself too, but
of course he also must deliver in the ring.”
“Majiha
is of the opinion that he is coming to Singapore
to deal with this inexperienced kid
in style, so he is not lacking in
self-confidence either."
“I
think the people of Singapore has great hopes
for Ridhwan, and we think that
on May 27 he will make everyone proud."
But why so soon? According
to O´Farrell it is very simple:
“Doing
something as extraordinary as this, so early in
his career, is what will make him one of the
biggest sports heroes in Singapore as his career
progress. And daring to be great
is what really makes a hero", finishes
O´Farrell.
Ridhwan is aware that he
will need to get past a very tough opponent in
Majiha to accomplish his goal. He took little
time off after winning the Asia title in early
April, and has since been training hard to make
sure he doesn’t disappoint himself, or
Singapore.
Said Ridhwan: “I have
seen some of his fights on video, and he is a
very good fighter. He has fought some of the
best around. Tough, technically good,
experienced. Our styles will blend very well,
and its going to be a great fight.”
While soft-spoken and
humble, Ridhwan has no problem expressing his
own self-confidence:
“There
will be a lot of punches in this fight, and it
will not go twelve rounds. Of course I believe I
will be the one getting my hands raised, and I
will become Singapore´s first professional
boxing world champion come May
27.
