Somebody´s O had to go, as the vacant Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) Youth world Super Lightweight title was contested on Saturday, May 31, at the World Siam Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

In a terrific match-up of undefeated up-and-coming southpaws, Ege Konuk, from Turkey but based in Thailand, took on local man Chaiyapong Phongwankittiku, AKA Jackie Little Yodsanan, on a massive show promoted by FCC Promotion in association with Highland Boxing Team.

This fight exceeded all expectations, as both men had come to win and started at a frantic pace, throwing hard shots with intentions to score a knockout.

Jackie, trained by his father, former WBA world Super Featherweight champion Theera Phongwan, probably edged the first round, while Konuk appeared to take round two with hard combinations and a higher work-rate.

After an even third round it looked as if Jackie was taking over in round four, and he hurt Konuk before flooring him with a hard left hand. Konuk beat the count, but looked in serious trouble.

Ironically, the knock-down shifted the momentum slightly in Konuk´s favour. Every round was all action, but Konuk´s work-rate and combinations served him very well, and the second half of the fight was his, even if it was not by much.

There was so much back-and-forth in this fight it is hard to describe, and the last three stanzas were more toe-to-toe action. After ten rounds of war, an obvious contender for UBO Fight of the Year went to the scorecards.

And the scores perfectly reflected the closeness of the bout, with judge Julathon Tharakavhat scoring it all even at 95-95, while judges Thanakorn Kanthong and Phakaphon Songmani both had it 95-94 for Konuk, making him the winner by Majority Decision.

Konuk, who improved to 15-0 (8), is the new UBO Youth world champion, but two stars were born on this evening in Bangkok. Not only he, but also Phongwankittiku, now 10-1 (9), can be immensely proud of their effort, and a rematch should be a high priority for everyone involved.
