It was supposed to be a coming-out party for previously undefeated Brazilian Mateus Munhoz, as he battled Venezuelan Luis Jose Marin Garcia for the vacant Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) Continental (South America) Heavyweight title on Saturday night, April 6, in Sao Paolo.

But the local fans watching ringside at the Expo Center Norte, went home disappointed with the outcome, as Marin Garcia impressively pulled off the upset to win his first title after a career of taking on all comers.

It was a competitive fight from the start, with both men trying to gain the upper-hand and both having their moments, but when Munhoz appeared to suffer a hand-injury in the fourth round Marin Garcia seized the moment and took over.

The visitor dominated round four and five, and in round six he scored a heavy knock-down which prompted the referee to immediately wave the fight off, deciding that Munhoz would not be able to recover. Time of stoppage: 0.16.

El Expreso” Marin Garcia (37), who in his last fight went to Germany to defeat another undefeated local prospect, improved his professional record to 15-6 (10).

28-year-old “Campinas” Munhoz can certainly come again, but see his statistics drop to 6-1-1 (2).

The fight headline a boxing-show part of the 2024 Arnold Sports Festival South America.
