26-year-old Nelson beat Venezuelan Nestor
“Gigante” Gonzalez (28) by split decision
(117-111, 117-111, 110-118)
to win
the vacant title on Friday, December 29, in
Carmen De Apicala, Tolima, Colombia.
With the
biggest win of his career, Nelson improved his
professional record to 21-2-1 (8), while
Gonzalez falls to 28-5 (20).
It was a
competitive and taxing fight in the blistering
heat, with Gonzalez stalking Nelson and the
American boxing smartly from the outside, using
his speed and movement to neutralize the reach
advantage of his opponent.

Both men
clearly in excellent shape, Nelson was the more
accurate of the two, and Gonzalez the aggressor
trying to use his physique to gain the upper hand
in what was a hard but clean and well-fought
contest.
“It
was a hard fight”, said the new UBO world
champion. “He is a tough fighter, but I was just a
bit sharper and wanted it more.”
A former
amateur standout, Nelson turned pro in 2016 and
has suffered a couple of setbacks on his way. But
he has clearly learned from them, and proved
against Gonzalez that persistence and
determination can eventually take you to the top.
The fight
was promoted by 8 Count Boxing in association with
Diego Medina.
