Issa Salum James, the undefeated Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) International Super Lightweight champion from Tanzania, was forced to dig deep when he successfully defended his title on Friday, July 7.

Headlining in front of a passionate crowd in his home-town Kahama, Salum James took on Malawian challenger Limbani “The Machine” Chikapa, on paper arguably the sternest test of his career to date.

And Chikapa proved just as strong as expected, as he gave the champion a good run for his money in what was an even and competitive fight.

Salum James started strong, and the visitor had his best moments from the third, winning several rounds in the middle of the contest.

It looked like a fight which would go the full distance, but in the ninth round Salum James found extra energy when he hurt Chikapa, and put his punches together to score a knockout.

With the victory, Salum James takes his professional record to 9-0 (7), having won the title last February. Chikapa travels home at 11-10 (3) after a fine performance.

The Tanzanian puncher probably learned more against Chikapa than in any previous outing, and at 33 years of age he has little time to waste if he is to go to the next level while still in his prime.

He could potentially next fight a credible opponent for the vacant UBO All-Africa title, attempting to further build on his resume.
