UBO - Universal Boxing Organization™

Not many professional boxers can claim to be nearing forty bouts and still be undefeated, but one who can is Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) Inter-Continental Lightweight champion Abel Mendoza.

Mendoza, a 27-year-old from El Paso, Texas, won the UBO title on April 29 when he stopped game late substitute Eduard Gonzalez in five rounds, taking his record to 37-0 (27) since entering the paid code in 2016.

A young man with the talent and looks to be a star, Mendoza is waiting for confirmation of his next fight and answered five quick questions in the meantime.

What got you started in boxing, and what kind of amateur background do you have?

It was my dad who got me into boxing, and I went on to have more than 200 amateur bouts before turning pro.

Your fight in Colombia where you became UBO Inter-Continental Lightweight champion, how do you grade your performance?

I grade my performance an 8 out of 10. I did good, but there are still a few things to work on.

Who are the best boxers you have been in the ring with, amateur pro or sparring?

I would say Gervonta Davis (29-0, WBA world champion), Lamont Roach (23-1-1, former world title-challenger), Christopher Diaz (former two-time world title-challenger), and Juan Carlos Burgos (35-7-3, former three-time world title-challenger).

If you were to compare yourself to another fighter, past or present, who would that be?

Because of his relentlessness, I would compare myself to Julio Cesar Chavez.

Finally, a random and silly question: pick one combination, cheesecake with cheese gravy, or chicken nuggets with whipped cream?

Man, I wouldn't try neither! But if I had to...Chicken nuggets with whipped cream...
