But the
27-year-old from El Paso, Texas had to work very
hard against Colombian late substitute Eduard
Gonzalez (5-3-1, 2 KOs), who came to fight his
chance and gave it his everything.
Mendoza
was at times under serious pressure from
Gonzalez, but the American showed that he has
much more than just a glossy record as he found
ways to navigate through the Colombian storm.
After a
relatively quiet first round, Gonzalez, a
replacement for a replacement, started to go for
the knockout in round two and proved a very
dangerous opponent for the favourite.
But
Mendoza, a former ABF and WBC regional titlist,
used his superior experience, and landed his own
shots while Gonzalez started to run out of gas
at the end of round three.
