2014 UBO Boxer Of The Year: Djamel Dahou

While the full line-up of the annual Universal Boxing Organization™ Awards recipients will as always be announced in early January, this year we will start a little early to honor the 2014 Boxer Of The Year, reigning UBO World Welterweight Champion Djamel Dahou.

 
  

Djamel Dahou turned professional at only eighteen in 2010, and won the Algerian national Super Lightweight title less than two years later. In 2013 he captured the UBO All-Africa crown in the same weight class, before moving up to Welterweight.

He scored five straight knockouts in his new division, before traveling to Tanzania to face local hero Said Yazidu for the vacant UBO World title on September 12, which he won in impressive fashion by stopping his experienced opponent in the very first round.

With that victory Dahou became the youngest ever UBO World Champion at only 22 years, 3 months and 5 days.

 

 

A hero to his fellow Algerians, Dahou was quick to share the glory after becoming world champion, when he said after the Yazidu fight:

“I could not have done this without the support of the Algerian people, and I dedicate this world championship to them, and to my country.”

Earlier this month he made a long-awaited homecoming to Algeria when he stopped Mexican Daniel Valenzuela in the first round in front of a lively sold-out crowd, and his current record stands at an unblemished 13-0 (12).

He is expected to fight again in Algeria in early 2015, defending his UBO World title.
