Featured UBO Champion: Gilberto Mendoza

When Gilberto Mendoza won the Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) Inter-Continental Light Flyweight title last July in Mexico, it was the result of perseverance and persistence.

  
 

The 35-year-old Mexican-American has never had an easy ride, and probably never wanted one, taking on all comers from Light Flyweight to Featherweight, often as the B side.


From November 2021 and November 2023, he went 0-7-1 and it looked as if he had settled into the role of journeyman and would never win a significant title.


But since then he has won five of seven, losing only to undefeated world class operators Dylan Price (16-0) and Matthew Griego (14-0).


 
 

When he defeated David Martinez for the UBO title in Rosarito on July 6, it was a close fight. Mendoza got the nod by split decision, and had finally achieved one of his dreams.

His record currently 24-19-4 (11), he may not be your first pick as a future world champion, but people who refuse to give up are hard to bet against.
