Roberto Valenzuela Jr. won the vacant Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) Continental (North America) Middleweight title on Friday night, November 22, in Revere, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston.

Valenzuela, from Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico, defeated local favourite Eslih Owusu by seventh round stoppage after a competitive fight on a show promoted by Nolan Bros Boxing at the Oceanside Events Center.

Large parts of the fight saw Owusu with his back on the ropes attempting to counter the attacks of Valenzuela, but he often came out second best in those situations.

He had more success when he boxed in the centre of the ring, where he could use his reach to unsettle Valenzuela.

It was an even contest, but in round seven Owusu was back on the ropes and got caught and hurt when trying to use the ropes for leverage on his punches.

Valezuela took full advantage, launched an attack, and when Owusu didn't respond during a flurry of punches referee Kevin Hope stepped in a saved him. Official time of stoppage: 2:19.

At the time of the stoppage two judges had the fight even (57-57), while the third had Owusu slightly ahead (58-56).

After an excellent performance, the new UBO champion, still only twenty-five years old, improved his professional record to 29-5 (27). Owusu (24) drops to 12-2 (7).
