In front of a loud and enthusiastic crowd at the Mariott Pyramid Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico, home-town hero Clinton Chavez won the vacant Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) Continental (North America) Super Welterweight title on Saturday night, November 9.

The Native Kid” Chavez scored a technical knockout in round eight against undefeated Mario Gonzalez, from Hobbs, New Mexico, after a tough and very exciting main event of a show promoted by Legacy Promotions.

Gonzalez started the fight best and tried to make his mark early. It was clear that his intentions were to get Chavez out of there early, and he landed some big shots in the process.

But Chavez weathered the storm and had a big round three as Gonzalez started to slow down. But it remained competitive, and in round four Gonzalez appeared back in command.

In round five it was Chavez on top, as he used his reach to out-box Gonzalez. But he couldn't keep it up in rounds six and seven, where Gonzalez gave as good as he got.

The end came when Chavez started to hurt Gonzalez with clean punches. Gonzalez never stopped fighting back, and was as game as they come, but appeared close to going down when referee Robert Ruelas stepped in and stopped him on his feet. Time of stoppage: 2:55 of round eight.

It was an excellent fight between two proud warriors. After seven rounds, two judges had Chavez slightly ahead, while the third had Gonzalez in front.

New UBO champion Chavez improved his professional record to 8-2 (5) after the biggest win of his career, while Gonzalez, who can also be pleased with his own performance, drops to 5-1 (4).
