Underdog Jonny Zeze won the vacant Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) Continental (Europe) Welterweight title in Montesilvano, Italy on Saturday night, July 27.

Zeze, fighting out of Rome, defeated undefeated local man Ivan Guarnieri at the Campo Sportivo Galileo Speziale, in a rematch of their original encounter this past February.

Guarnieri won the first fight on points, so Zeze came into the encore looking to even the score and was clearly determined and well-prepared.

On a card promoted by Pugilistica Di Giacomo, both men had good moments in what was an intense and hard-fought encounter, but in the end it was Zeze who got his hands raised.

Judge Paolo Ruggeri scored the fight 77-76 for Guarnieri, but judges Giorgio Volpin and Patrizio Di Marzio scored it 76-75 and 77-76 for Zeze, making the visitor the winner by razor-thin split decision.

Born in Cameroon, Zeze improved his professional record to 7-4-1 (2) in a career taking on all comers and only losing to undefeated foes. Guarnieri suffers his first defeat and drops to 7-1-1 (1).

With the score now 1-1, this rivalry could certainly do with a rubber-match. Zeze and Guarnieri could probably fight each other numerous times and all fights would likely be very even and entertaining.
