UBO World Flyweight Title Fight 11.28

November 17, 2010 / BY UBO PRESS OFFICER

Promoter Pius Agaton and his Aga Sports & Art will promote a fight for the vacant Universal Boxing Organization™ World Flyweight title on November 28 at the DCC Keko Hall in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. UBO International champion Juma Fundi will be attempting to realize his dream of becoming a world champion, taking on former PABA champion Anthony Mathias.

Fundi, 13-4 (7), won the International title in July, stopping Shabani Kilumbelumbe in the ninth round. He was since lined up to fight in Uganda for the world super flyweight title, but that fight didn’t materialize and he now has the opportunity to win a world title in his preferred weight class, and on home ground.

At 31, eight years older than his opponent, Anthony Mathias, 26-16-2 (14), brings a lot more experience to the ring than Fundi. Turning pro in 2001, Mathias won the Tanzanian National title in 2005, and the PABA crown later that same year when he went to Thailand and stopped the highly ranked Komrit Twins Gym (15-1) in four rounds.

To prove it was no fluke, Mathias defended the PABA title in Thailand when he stopped another local hero, Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat , and advanced in the WBA world rankings. But a shot at the WBA world title eluded him, and a run of not so good results pushed him out of contention.

Most of Matthias´ losses were against top-notch opposition, including world class operators such as Pramuansak Posuwan, Lee Haskins, Michael Domingo, Jundy Maraon and Zolani Tete, and he has so far campaigned at a much higher level than Fundi. He will be looking to take advantage on November 28, and, coming off three victories, he is confident of finally winning his first world championship.

Fundi vs. Mathias will be the first ever UBO World title fight in Tanzania, and All-Africa Commissioner and Vice President Emmanuel Mlundwa expects a big crowd for the event.
