World class bantamweight Mbwana
Matumla lifted the vacant UBO
I/C title with a fifth round
knockout over Festus Omondi from
Uganda, while Cheka retained the
middleweight version with a
second-round blowout of late
substitute, former Brazilian
champion Isak Tavares.
Matumla, who now boasts a record
of 19-4, 11 KOs, and is a former
IBO world champion, scored three
knocdowns in the fifth round on
his way to finishing off the
visitor. Omondi, who gave a very
spirited performance, saw his
record fall to 8-2, 6 KOs.
Francis Cheka was originally
scheduled to fight Enrique Areco
from Argentina, but something
went wrong on the way to Dar Es
Salaam, and the promoters
managed to bring in Isak Tavarez
at the last minute. Tavarez
tried, but Cheka was just too
strong and had no trouble
beating the South American by
knockout in round two.
