UBO - Universal Boxing Organization™

In what turned out to be a dominant and impressive performance in front of a sold out crowd at the Palais de Sport in Guelma, Algeria, local boxing icon Mohamed Benguesmia improved his professional record to 40-3-1 (33) when he stopped former World Cruiserweight Champion Laszlo Hubert (32-11, 22 KOs) from Hungary to capture the vacant Universal Boxing Organization™ World Heavyweight title on Thursday night (6.28).

Benguesmia, a former WBO Intercontinental Champion at Cruiserweight with a victory over future world champion O’Neil Bell, looked trimmed and ready in his new weight class, and it appeared obvious that his mind was set on making a statement against the experienced Hungarian.

Using his jab effectively, Benguesmia countered with powerful right hands when Hubert tried to overwhelm him with flurries, and it quickly became apparent that the enthusiastic fans in the stands would have a great night. Benguesmia staggered his opponent in the second round, but Hubert made it through the stanza, still fighting back.

The third round was more of the same, with Benguesmia in control but Hubert putting on a valiant effort to make his own mark. But in the fourth it was all over as Benguesmia connected with a huge right hand that send Hubert reeling, and referee Gilles Walhin from France had seen enough.

The spectators erupted in cheers as the bout was waved off, and loudly celebrated their new champion as Benguesmia was awarded the UBO belt in the ring. Benguesmia has not lost a fight in more than twelve years, and he never lost in Algeria.

It was a great moment for the fans, as well as for Benguesmia and promoter Mohammed Guenif who staged the show with support from the Algerian Federation of Boxing and its president Dr. Abdellah Bessalem, and the Wali of Guelma.
