Anthony Dirrell is the new Universal Boxing Organization™ Inter-Continental Super Middleweight Champion after defeating former Olympian and late substitute Dante “Inferno” Craig on Saturday night (7.2) at Atwood Stadium in Flint, Michigan.

With the victory Dirrell won his first professional championship and improved his unbeaten record to 22-0 (19), while Craig falls to 18-10-1 (13).

The fight was promoted by Leon Lawson Jr. and Team Dirrell Promotions.

Dante Craig took the fight on very short notice when original opponent Michi Munoz was arrested last week, but the Cincinnati native came motivated and game for the challenge.

However, the local favorite wasn’t fazed by the change of adversary and seemed on top of his game.

Despite a good effort from Craig, Dirrell took control of the fight early on and landed solid shots to body and head. His jab was effective, and his combinations were sharp.

In round five Dirrell caught Craig with a hard body shot which sent the visitor down for the count. Time of stoppage was 1:50 of round five, and Anthony Dirrell could celebrate with all his fans at ringside.

The new Champion will not rest on his laurels, as he is now scheduled to fight former IBF world champion Alejandro Berrio on July 22 in Las Vegas, a fight that will be aired by ESPN.
