34-year-old Abdesselam, who improved his
professional record to 14-9-1 (5), dramatically
knocked out rugged and experienced Spaniard Juan
Martinez already in the first round, to the
delight of a close to capacity crowd.
While the local man entered the ring as the
favorite, it was not expected that he would be
able to handle the usually durable Martinez with
such ease on his way to winning his first
championship in the paid ranks.
The visitor came out looking for an opening to
counter, but when Abdesselam caught him with a
hard right hand it was all over before it really
got started, as Martinez crashed to the floor.
