UBO World Light Heavyweight Champion Lefoumbou
Ngoma is from Congo-Brazaville, he won his title
in Hong Kong, but his countrymen will make
boxing history by fighting for UBO titles in
their native country.
Having had the honor of organizing the very
first African Games in 1965, Congo-Brazzaville
and its president Denis Sassou Nguesso is again
making African sports history with this great
event that will mark the 52nd anniversary of
Congo independence.
President Sassou Nguesso is no stranger to
lending support to professional boxing, as he
patronized a 2001 title fight in
Congo-Brazzaville for D.R.C.-native Mukadi Manda,
who is promoting the August 15 show, but now it
is his own “sons of the country”, Hurkus and
Kibongoui, who compete for championships at
home.
The president of the Congolese Boxing
Federation, Mr. Mari-Magloire Dambendzet, was
also in that position when promoter Mukadi Manda
fought aforementioned title fight in 2001, and
the involvement of Mr. Dambendzet is a
significant factor in bringing the two UBO title
fights to Brazzaville.
Dambendzet wants to encourage young talents to
go far, and strive to even fight for world
championships in their home country, and not
necessarily go abroad for such opportunities.
Samba Hurcus served Congo for several years in
the national team supervised by Mr. Dambendzet,
who would be happier than anyone to experience
the boxer he saw evolving in front of his eyes
become champion of Africa on August 15.
