Yankello feels that Jones, 55-8 (40), has one last
run at a world championship left in him, and
dismisses the suggestions that Jones should call
it a career and retire from the sport:
“I see too much left in him in the gym”, Yankello
told Michael Walters of boxingtalk.com. “I think
he has something left in him like a last hurrah,
like Bernard Hopkins had against Kelly Pavlik”.
Jones won the UBO title last December when he beat
Max Alexander in Atlanta, and now he is ready to
take another step towards winning a cruiserweight
world title, which would make him a five-division
world titlist. And despite the fact that he is no
longer the unbeatable fighter he once was,
Yankello believes he has enough left to accomplish
his goal.
“To me he is the greatest talent in the history of
boxing. Even at 43 he still has a lot left
talent-wise. His hand speed is still tremendous
and he has technical skills he hasn’t used in a
long time. I really think he can compete at a
world championship level. When he is using his jab
he is still unbelievable”, the Ambridge, PA.-based
trainer told Walters.
And Yankello feels that the UBO title-winning
fight against Alexander was a step in the right
direction for Jones, that the legendary Floridian
got away from some of the mistakes that caused him
to lose some big fights in recent years: |
