21-year-old late substitute Monika Singh from India captured the vacant Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) Youth Light Flyweight title impressively on Saturday, September 6, at World Siam Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

Singh, who stepped in when compatriot Tannu Devi pulled out due to injury, stopped Pakistan´s previously undefeated favourite Aliya Soomro in round six, after dominating every round enroute the biggest win of her career.

Soomro (20), a pro only since this past May, was being fast-tracked, but found herself in deep water and could not cope with the longer reach of the much taller Singh.

Singh landed at will, while Soomro struggled to find a way, and in round six Singh upped the tempo and forced the stoppage when referee Wanchai Pongsri felt she had absorbed enough punishment.

The new UBO Youth champion took her record to 10-2 (5), and could easily find herself in a challenge for the “adult” world title sooner rather than later.

It is back to the drawing-board for Soomro, who sees her record dip to 3-1 (2). She will hopefully have learned from the experience, and can come back strong.

The fight was promoted by TL Boxing Promotions.
