November 29, 2010 / BY UBO PRESS OFFICER

Juma Fundi is the new Universal Boxing Organization™ World Flyweight Champion. In front of a sold-out DDC Keko Hall in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania on Sunday night (Nov. 28), the 23-year-old beat game former PABA champion Anthony Mathias by unanimous decision after a fast-paced and entertaining fight.

The two warriors didn’t waste any time feeling each other out, and it was clear that both wanted the victory badly. In the build-up to the fight both had promised to knock the other man out, but Fundi proved to be the quicker and stronger boxer on the night. At times he appeared to be on his way to stop Mathias, but the durable veteran never went down, and always fought back gallantly.

After twelve rounds of thrilling action, the judges scored the bout 120-109 (Said Chaku), 120-111 (Omari Golaya) and a too close 116-114 (Galus Lugongo). Despite Fundi winning most rounds clearly, Mathias was always dangerous and determined, and the enthusiastic crowd thoroughly enjoyed the drama.

With the victory Fundi improved his record to 14-4 (7), and Mathias dropped to 27-17-2 (14). The fight was promoted by Pius Agaton and his Aga Sports & Art, and supervised by UBO All-Africa Commissioner Emmanuel Mlundwa. Referee was Anthony Ruta.
