In an
all-Mexican affair, Fernandez (31) was made to
work hard, but grinded out a deserved unanimous
decision over Araceli “Muneca” Palacios Figueroa
(35).
Fernandez
was coming down in weight after losing a fight
for the WBA world Super Bantamweight title last
June, when she was forced to retire due to to a
broken nose against Mayerlin Rivas, and was in
with a game co-challenger.
Palacios
Figueroa did all she could to gain control
against the local favourite, and made it a
competitive fight, but Fernandez was more
effective and after ten high-paced rounds she
was crowned the winner by scores of 97-93, 97-93
and 98-92.
