In front of her home-town fans at the Gimnasio Josue Neri Santos in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, Karina “La Bella” Fernandez won the vacant Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) Female world Bantamweight title on Saturday night, November 5.

In an all-Mexican affair, Fernandez (31) was made to work hard, but grinded out a deserved unanimous decision over Araceli “Muneca” Palacios Figueroa (35).

Fernandez was coming down in weight after losing a fight for the WBA world Super Bantamweight title last June, when she was forced to retire due to to a broken nose against Mayerlin Rivas, and was in with a game co-challenger.

Palacios Figueroa did all she could to gain control against the local favourite, and made it a competitive fight, but Fernandez was more effective and after ten high-paced rounds she was crowned the winner by scores of 97-93, 97-93 and 98-92.

The new UBO World Bantamweight champion improved her professional record to 18-7-1 (3), while Palacios Figueroa, who has never been stopped despite fighting some of the very best in the world, drops to a misleading 11-14 (2).

Brodcast live by Canal 44, the fight headlined a card promoted by Union Promotions in association with 2M Boxing Promotions.
