The Angel of War”, Sarah Achieng from Kenya, had no intentions of following any kind of unwritten script when she faced undefeated Marina Popova for the vacant Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) Inter-Continental Lightweight title on December 5, 2015 in Pyatigorsk, Russia.

Popova (2-0) was hailed as a certain future world champion, and, while expected to be a test, Achieng (10-2, 6 KOs) was considered a stepping-stone in that direction.

But Achieng had other plans, and entered the fight with plenty of confidence as the reigning East & Central Africa and Kenyan national champion. She was simply too experienced and crafty for Popova, and won a clear unanimous decision (80-73, 79-74, 79-74).

Unfortunately a break of almost three years followed for Achieng, and she was not able to capitalize on the momentum.

But she is now working her way back to the top, and won the Commonwealth Super Lightweight title a year ago, improving her record to 14-2 (7). Still only 34 years old, she has time to eventually win even higher accolades.

Armenian born Popova last fought in March of 2019, and looks retired with a 6-2 (0) record.
