It was billed as “The Great Revenge”, and the anticipated rematch between Ecuadorian compatriots Antonio Ocles and Diego Quinonez on Saturday September 24 at Coliseo Julio Cesar Hidalgo in Quito lived up to expectations.

Quinonez had won their first fight by third round knockout, in January of 2021, and was planning to do a similar job in the second go-around, and pick up the vacant Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) International Super Middleweight title in the process. But Ocles had other plans.

It was not always pretty, but it was entertaining from start to finish as the two rivals traded punches at close quarters. Neither of them interested in taking a backwards step, it made for compelling action and plenty of excitement for the enthusiastic fans in attendance.

Many rounds were close, but the difference turned out to be a better game-plan from Ocles, who effectively avoided punches from Quinonez before countering, while Quinonez appeared to be only going for the knockout.

No knockout came, and judges Jose Xavier Castro, Leonardo Farias and Marco Jurado all scored the fight in favour of Ocles: 99-93, 97-94 and 97-96.

A true warrior who has never been afraid of fighting anyone, Ocles improved his record to 12-11-2 (3), winning his first title after seven years of more than paying his dues. Quinonez, now 6-5-1 (4), can also be proud of his performance and can certainly come again.

The fight was promoted by Capital Box.
