After finishing a very good amateur career following a gold medal at the 2007 Pan American Games in Brazil, there were high expectations for Karl “The Dynamite” Dargan when the Philadelphian turned professional later that year

Trained and mentored by the late, great Naazim Richardson, Dargan had his first paid outing on a show promoted by Golden Boy Promotions at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, scoring a decision over Roberto Norris (1-0) in December of 2007.

Unfortunately he was not quite as active as would have been ideal for a young prospect, but three and a half years in he had compiled a 9-0 (3) record, and his handlers felt he was ready for his first title-shot.

On August 13, 2011 he was matched with Arizona´s Juan Suazo, a man much better than his mediocre 8-4-2 (5) record suggested, with the vacant Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) Inter-Continental Lightweight title on the line.

On a card staged by Top Rank in Atlantic City, televised by Fox, Dargan showed his great potential as he stopped Suazo in the sixth round.

Following that impressive performance, Dargan went on to also win IBF regional and NABF titles, in 2013 and 2014 respectively, before he was surprisingly defeated on points by Canadian Tony Luis (18-2) in January of 2015.

After that set-back, Dargan was inactive until returning in August of 2018. He won two fights that year, but was then idle for another long spell, only returning in July of 2021 with a decent win over Ivan Delgado (13-3-2).

He last fought on June 4 of this year, shockingly getting stopped in the first round by Alfredo Santiago (13-2) in Minneapolis.

Now 37, and with a 20-2 (10) record, he can still do something with his career, but its safe to say that things have not gone according to plan so far. But no matter what, the night he won the UBO title he looked every bit a future world champion.
