Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) Caribbean Super Lightweight Champion Andres Zapata from the Dominican Republic is a little bit of a mystery.

La Momia” (The Mummy) doesn't exactly have a glossy record, but he fights like someone who does.

Unfortunately several of his fights are not listed on BoxRec, but we know he has at least nine victories and eight loses.

However, his tally has been reported to really be 11-9 (7) and even 15-9 (10). All we can say for sure is, he is a very capable fighter!

Born in June of 1991 in Los Cacaos in the San Cristobal province, Zapata has done most of his professional fighting in Santo Domingo.

That's also where he scored his, presumably, biggest victory to date, when he stopped compatriot Vladimir Baez (26-6-2) in the fifth round on December 19, 2020 at the Dominican Fiesta Hotel & Casino to win the UBO title.

Baez was returning to his birth-country after fighting mostly in Japan, where he has lived and is married to a local woman, since 2014.

No question he was the A-side, but Zapata had other ideas and overwhelmed the favorite early in the fight, kept the pressure on and finished the fight with a hard right hand in the fifth round.

Less than two months before facing Baez, Zapata had proved his worth by taking Richard Solano (22-2-2) to the wire before losing a split decision.

All of his defeats have come against very good opponents, and Zapata is a prime example of a record not doing the boxer justice.

Still only twenty-nine, he has time to capitalize on his current momentum if given the right opportunities.
